Houston City Council is scheduled to vote Wednesday, Sept. 23, on whether to apply for a $150 million U.S. Department of Justice grant that requires recipients to align with federal immigration enforcement priorities.
- DOJ's own application window closed Sept. 1, so a "yes" vote would send Houston's request in after the deadline, and the department has not said whether the city would get an extension.

The decision echoes an April standoff, when Gov. Greg Abbott threatened to pull more than $110 million in state funding after council briefly limited how long Houston police could hold someone on an ICE administrative warrant.
