Houses evacuated as man arrested on suspicion of possessing an 'explosive substance'

Properties will be evacuated in Aberystwyth after a man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an explosive substance. Dyfed- Powys Police have confirmed they received reports of a number of loud bangs coming from a property in the Loveden Road area at around 7:20pm on Wednesday, September 7.

The force said on Thursday afternoon that a police cordon remains in place and as a result of advice from explosive experts at the Ministry of Defence some local properties will be evacuated. A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an explosive substance and currently remains in police custody.

The incident is ongoing and the local authority has set up a centre at Plas Crug Leisure Centre to support those evacuated . No more information on the nature of the substance have been released.

A spokesperson for Dyfed-Powys Police said: "We were called at about 7.20pm on Wednesday evening, 7th September 2022, to a report of a number of loud bangs coming from the vicinity of a property in the Loveden Road area of Aberystwyth.

“A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an explosive substance and currently remains in police custody. As a result of further enquiries and advice from MoD explosives experts, we have implemented a cordon, which will see local properties evacuated.

“We are working with other emergency services and the local authority to minimise the impact on the community and bring this incident to a close as safely and quickly as possible. The local authority has set up a centre at Plas Crug Leisure Centre.”
