Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon has been renewed for a second season just days after the first episode of the HBO show premiered.
Sky Atlantic’s House of the Dragon made its debut this month, three years after the HBO epic came to an end, following eight tumultuous series which made its stars household names.
House Of The Dragon stars a fresh cast of stars, including Paddy Considine, Emma D'Arcy, Matt Smith, Eve Best, Milly Alcock, and Rhys Ifans.
The new show takes place 172 years before Game of Thrones and is based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, telling the story of House Targaryen.
House Of The Dragon has been given the greenlight for season two after the show raked in a total of 10 million viewers the night of its premiere, Variety reported.
Due to additional playbacks, the number has spiked up to a whopping 20 million, making the Game Of Thrones prequel HBO's biggest premiere audience to date.
The executive vice president of HBO Programming, Francesca Orsi, released a statement following the news of the show's quick second season renewal.
She said: “We are beyond proud of what the entire House of the Dragon team has accomplished with season one.
“Our phenomenal cast and crew undertook a massive challenge and exceeded all expectations, delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV.”
“A huge thank you to George, Ryan, and Miguel for leading us on this journey. We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with season two.”
The first season of the show took almost a year to film, with scenes shot in Cornwall and Devon. Stars Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy were spotted taking to Cornwall’s Holywell Bay Beach in white wigs and Targaryen garbs to shoot part of the show.
The show also returned to settings used in Game of Thrones filming, with Cáceres, in western Spain, returning as King’s Landing.
The Spanish town was famously used to depict the streets leading to the Red Keep when Euron brought his captives as an offering to Cersei in season seven.
The first season will air a total of 10 episodes, which cost millions of dollars each to film.
The number of episodes that will be included in the second season has yet to be revealed to fans, along with an expected release date or year.
