Hour by hour forecast as region wakes up to frosty morning after temperatures plummet overnight

The North East wakes up to another frosty morning as the cold snap continues. The region has been hit with wintry showers over the last few days while temperatures have plummeted overnight.

It was predicted that sub-zero temperatures were expected in many parts of the UK on Friday night while in Rothbury, Northumberland, the temperature was expected to drop as low as -3°C.

The weather continues to be as changeable as ever as those in Gateshead woke up to frost and fog which then quickly changed to sunny clear skies, while residents in Seaham had hailstones early on Saturday morning which was then followed by lovely sunshine.

The Met Office weather forecast states: "A frosty start for many places, then cloudy at times but also some sunny spells, with scattered showers. The showers will be mainly this afternoon, although some could start the day, and will be occasionally wintry, especially over high ground. Maximum temperature 8 °C."

And for tonight: "Any remaining showers will quickly die away, leaving a little patchy cloud but also long clear periods, allowing a widespread frost to develop. Isolated freezing fog patches may form. Minimum temperature -3 °C."
