Staff at Ayrshire hospital's have received verbal abuse as departments come under extreme pressure.
Health chiefs have confirmed instances of abuse across hospitals and primary care settings.
Claire Burden, Chief Executive at NHS Ayrshire & Arran has called out the unacceptable abuse against compassionate staff.
The health board's top brass fear an increase in waiting times has lead to patients reacting negatively.
It comes as Emergency Departments at Ayr and Crosshouse Hospitals struggle to cope with demand - with the health board asking patients only to visit A&E for critical emergencies.
The NHS Ayrshire & Arran Chief Executive, said: "It is with regret that across NHS Ayrshire & Arran some staff have reported instances where they have been subject to verbal abuse. This is not acceptable.
"We appreciate patients and families can find themselves in stressful situations when there are waits in the system that can appear unfair, and that people may react negatively in the moment.
"However, all our staff have the right to work in a safe environment, free from violence and aggression."
Ms Burden added: "Acts of violence and aggression directed towards our staff are unacceptable – whatever form this takes and whatever reasons are given.
"Our staff are compassionate and empathetic to our service users and understand that attending hospital can be distressing, particularly at this time when pressures on our system can mean long waits and lengthy delays.
"Please remember our staff are there to help you. We ask that you are patient, kind and respectful towards our staff."
