Hospital and surgical center pharmacies across the country have been told to stop using and stop distributing two lots of Brevital Sodium, an injectable anesthetic, after the manufacturer found cellulose particles in the product. Par Health announced the voluntary recall on Oct. 8, and the FDA posted the company's notice on Oct. 9.
The recall is at the hospital level, not the consumer level. No adverse events had been reported to the company as of the announcement, but Par warned that injecting product containing particles could cause life-threatening blockages in the lungs and other blood vessels.
