American Regent has pulled three lots of Epinephrine Injection, USP 30 mg per 30 mL from hospitals and clinics across the country after customers reported vials that were cracking and leaking. When the company investigated, it found something more troubling inside the solution: particles it identified as nylon, cellulosic material, acrylic, polyethylene and glass.
This is not a recall of the auto-injectors that families carry in backpacks and purses. The recalled product is a 30 mL multiple-dose vial used by clinicians, most often in emergency departments, intensive care units, and operating rooms. It is given for severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, and to raise blood pressure in adults whose circulation is failing from septic shock. Patients do not handle it. Hospitals do.
