Horror as man dies after brutal attack on stairs at London Underground station

A 28-year-old man has died following an assault at Southwark Underground station.

British Transport Police officers were called to the station at 9.44pm on Thursday, August 22 after reports of an attack on the stairs. Paramedics also attended the scene, and the victim was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

The man passed away on Saturday evening with his family by his side.

A suspect was arrested on Friday morning in connection with the attack. He has since been charged with Grievous Bodily Harm with intent.

Following the victim's death, detectives will seek to amend the indictment to reflect the change in circumstances.

The accused, Rakeem Miles, 23, of East Street in Southwark, has been remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear at Inner London Crown Court on Friday, September 20.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Paul Attwell, said: "There is no place for violence on the rail network and I am urging anyone with information, who is yet to speak to us, to get in touch.

"We have specialist family liaison officers supporting the victim's family and my thoughts remain with them at this incredibly difficult time."

Authorities are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information is urged to contact British Transport Police on 0800 405040 or text 61016, quoting reference 772 of 22 August.
