A man was attacked and killed by a crocodile before his body was dragged by the animal along a river in front of horrified onlookers.
The terrifying incident in India of the 30-year-old field labourer, identified as Imran Diwan, was caught on camera in a video that went viral.
Imran had reportedly visited the Dhadhar river in Sokhdaraghu village in the Indian state of Gujurat on Sunday, August 7, when he is thought to have possibly fallen into the water, according to local media reports.
Some people suggested that Imran might have instead been trying to cross the river when the ferocious reptile pounced upon him.
Large crowds of residents gathered on the riverbank as the crocodile carried the lifeless body, which kept appearing and then disappearing, through the surface of the water.
Before the footage finishes, the crocodile is seen reaching the water's edge with the Imran's body still in tow.
A few brave people reportedly tried to unsuccessfully rescue the mutilated body from its jaws.
A search operation was quickly put in place, which included fire brigade officials, but it was not until hours later during the night that his remains were found.
Deputy conservator of forests Ravirajsinh Rathod said: ''Forest officials were alerted, following which a search operation was launched with the help of the local administration.
"The victim's body was recovered around 10pm.
''The man's body bore bite marks on the shoulders.
He added that authorities were still trying to determine how the victim ended up in the river as nobody appeared to witness that particular moment.
Imran's brother Javed Diwan believed that he had been visiting a dargah, a Muslim shrine, located on the riverbank when the tragedy occurred.
He said: "I think he must have slipped from the parapet and fell in the river.
“The reptile caught hold of [him] and dragged [him] away.”
Javed added that his late brother is survived by his wife.
The Dhadhar river is home to dozens of crocodiles and residents claimed that some attacks on humans have happened in the area before.
In June, a similar incident reportedly occurred in nearby Vadodara city, when three crocodiles were seen eating a man's decomposed body in the Vishwamitri river.
India has three native crocodile species - saltwater, mugger and gharial - with an estimated wild population of up to 5,500.
