LOCALS in Glasgow said their homes “shook” after a van near the M8 motorway “exploded” late on Tuesday evening.
Firefighters have battled into the early hours of Wednesday morning, tackling the burning vehicle following reports of an “explosion” at around 11.20pm on Tuesday.
Local reports suggest there was a loud detonation late in the evening which reverberated across the city.
Images shared on social media showed a van parked in a street in the Cowcaddens area of the city ablaze with a large dark plume of smoke billowing into the sky.
According to some residents on social media, a second detonation could also be heard shortly after the initial “explosion”.
The Scottish Fire & Rescue Service (SFRS) has confirmed three appliances were sent to deal with the blaze, with firefighters tackling the burning vehicle until 1.30am.
Some residents shared that their homes “shook” following a large “boom,” with others saying they felt the ground shake.
According to local reports, the vehicle was parked beneath the M8 “construction zone,” and pictures online showed a small gathering of people who watched the flames engulf the van.
The M8 motorway viaduct is currently closed to allow roadworks to take place and strengthen the structure.
Traffic Scotland, the organisation which runs Scotland’s motorways, confirmed the M8 was restricted on Tuesday evening from Junction 16 (Craighall) to Junction 18 (Charing Cross).
A statement from Traffic Scotland said: “The M8 is currently restricted in both directions between Junction 16 and Junction 18 due to essential bridge repair works. Expect delays.”
