Home Office banned from housing asylum seekers in village hotel after legal bid

The Home Office has been temporarily banned from housing asylum seekers in a village hotel after a legal bid from the local council.

The Hull Humber View Hotel in North Ferriby was set to be closed to the public and would see at least one local couple's wedding plans in tatters.

But a temporary High Court Injunction is now in place which stops the government from housing immigrants in the four-star hotel, until a full hearing can take place on Monday, November 7.

A copy of the injunction, applied for by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, has been stapled to the front door of the hotel.

David Davis, Conservative MP for Haltemprice and Howden, tweeted: "The hotel is in entirely the wrong location and lacking appropriate amenities to support migrants."

Speaking on Saturday, before the injunction was revealed, local councillor Margaret Corless told the BBC she did not believe the hotel was suitable to house asylum seekers.

She said: "This hotel is remote. It's a substantial walking distance to the nearest village. It's a small village with three or four stores.

"It's substantially further to reach Hessle, and they'd have to cross a dual carriageway. These asylum seekers have very little money and they certainly don't have any transport.

"It would be very difficult to fill their time. They are not allowed to work, so they would be idle. There is nothing of interest."

A couple who were due to have their wedding at the venue in less than two weeks time, spoke to Hull Live about their disappointment and blamed the government for their lack of planning.

Dean Turner, 40, said: "My partner and I have been together for 21 years and have a family together. She is the love of my life and we have been so excited for our wedding day that was supposed to be only 14 days away.

"Everything had been booked and paid for including 25 rooms for our guests, a wedding dress, bridesmaid dresses, flowers, you name it. It's all we've been talking about for weeks and then I received the call from my wedding planner this morning.

"He told me that the hotel was getting taken over by someone else, so all bookings had been cancelled for the next year and he had 100 people to ring round. When I demanded answers about why I was only finding out now, he said he'd only found out himself this morning."

Mr Turner now said his wedding would have to be rescheduled for next year. He said the couple would either get a refund or be able to defer the flowers and venue but bridesmaid dresses that kids will grow out of and travel costs for guests are likely to be wasted.

He said: "My son was due to fly home from working overseas for the big day and we had plenty of rooms booked for family from Portsmouth. It is just unbelievable."

East Riding of Yorkshire Council's spokesman confirmed to the Daily Mirror that officers had applied for a High Court Injunction against the housing of asylum seekers at the hotel and that a temporary injunction was in place pending a full hearing.

A Home Office spokesman said: "The number of people arriving in the UK who require accommodation has reached record levels and has put our asylum system under incredible strain.

"The use of hotels to house asylum seekers is unacceptable – there are currently more than 37,000 asylum seekers in hotels costing the UK taxpayer £5.6 million a day.

"The use of hotels is a short-term solution and we are working hard with local authorities to find appropriate accommodation."
