Hollywood star Guy Pearce to return for emotional Neighbours finale

He's starred in countless Hollywood productions but Guy Pearce will join Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan by making a return to the Australian soap where he first made his name.

The actor who played Mike Young on the Australian soap from 1986 to 1989 has confirmed he will be returning to his role one last time before Neighbours ends for good this summer.

He's joining the likes of Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan for the special final, the Mirror reports.

Bosses had been hoping to secure a new backer for the soap after Channel 5 decided to pull out, but unable to locate one, they found themselves unable to carry on with the programme. It will air its final scenes later this summer.

After leaving Australian soaps behind, Pearce has gone on to have a hugely successful career, starring in the like of LA Confidential, Memento, The Hurt Locker, The King's Speech, Lawless, Prometheus, and Iron Man 3. He recently starred in the hit HBO show Mare of Easttown alongside Kate Winslet.

He shared: "It is very exciting and surreal at the same time being back on set again, however it feels like coming home.

"It's where it all started for me professionally. I've been asked to come back on occasions over the years and wondered if it was the right thing to do, but once I knew the show was finishing, I knew I had to do it. While I've caught up with many of the cast I worked with on the show over the years, there is nothing like being here all together again."

Executive producer Jason Herbison added: "I'm incredibly honoured that Guy is returning to the show for a very special story arc.

"Having him back on set has been poignant for him and for us. He's been very involved in the storyline, and I can't wait to finally answer the question for viewers – who is Mike Young today?"

It comes after Kylie admitted it was an "emotional" return to the show who helped launch her career.

"It was lovely and emotional. Driving into Ramsay Street was quite something," she said.

Asked about her reaction to being back on set, she added: "Firstly, where's all that time gone? Secondly, everything looks exactly the same. Thirdly, Scott, Charlene, Jane, Harold - it all just came flooding back."

Executive producer Jason Herbison had previously confirmed on the soap's Instagram account that the pair would be back, adding: "Scott and Charlene are the ultimate Neighbours couple and it would not feel right to end the show without them.

"We are thrilled that Jason and Kylie have come home to play a very special part in our series finale. It has been an emotional experience for them, for us and I'm sure it will be for our viewers."
