Holidaymakers can now enjoy hassle-free travel after the UK government slashed its red tape and relaxed Covid rules. Research has revealed that UK travellers are now spending more at the airport while waiting to board holiday flights - with the average family of four splashing out £100 on treats.
Holiday Extras asked 1,000 UK holidaymakers who had flown in the past three years what they did at the airport while they waited for a plane, and what all of it cost. On average, UK passengers said they spent £26.30 each while waiting to board - 25 per cent more than the £21 they were spending before the pandemic.
Biggest spenders were couples and solo travellers who splurged £36 per person while waiting to get onboard, while groups of three to four spent £24 each. The most popular way to spend the time waiting to board was a meal (95 per cent) or a snack (92 per cent), but 45 per cent even confessed to buying duty free “on impulse just to pass the time.”
