Hogwarts Legacy: How to choose a house and what are the differences

Hogwarts Legacy is upon us, and gamers around the world are finally taking their first steps into the Wizarding World. One of the most hotly anticipated games of the year has caused an online sensation even before it goes on general sale on Friday (February 10).

The open-world video game – set within the world of Harry Potter – puts players in the shoes of a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, who is joining in their fifth year. But before players can really sink their teeth into the game, they first need to get sorted into a house.

As Potter fans will already know, Hogwarts has four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. But how can you choose a house in Hogwarts Legacy and what are the differences between them?

How to choose your house in Hogwarts Legacy

Before getting started on their wizarding journey, players will find themselves front and centre in the school’s majestic Great Hall during the sorting ceremony. This is when the magical Sorting Hat will be placed on the character’s head to decide in which house they will be placed.

Once the iconic headgear is placed on the character’s head, it will start by asking about their expectations for the year. Players are given two responses to choose from, either ’I can’t wait to start classes’ or ’I can’t wait to explore’.

Whichever answer they choose doesn’t impact the game in any way – the important question comes next. The hat will follow up its first question by asking players to choose from one of four qualities, each corresponding to a different Hogwarts house.

‘Daring’ is Gryffindor, ‘Curiosity’ is Ravenclaw, ‘Loyalty’ is Hufflepuff, and ‘Ambition’ is Slytherin. Upon choosing from one of these qualities, the hat will make its decision and place the player in their house.

However, just as Harry Potter tells his son on his way to Hogwarts, the Sorting Hat takes the player’s choice into account. Players can ultimately override the hat’s decision and choose their house for themselves.

There’s no need to say “not Slytherin, not Slytherin,” simply press either the Circle (PlayStation) or B (Xbox) button to manually choose one of the other three houses. Once chosen, players can confirm their choice by pressing either the Square (PlayStation) or X (Xbox) button.

Choosing your Hogwarts house essentially comes down to personal preference, because no house is better than the others. However, there are some differences players should be aware of before making a decision.

How are the houses different in Hogwarts Legacy?

One of the main differences between the houses is that there are several house-specific side quests in Hogwarts Legacy. Perhaps the most intriguing of these is a brief visit to Azkaban prison, which is only available to students in Hufflepuff.

The house that players are placed in will also determine which characters they interact with throughout the game, as each house is home to different witches and wizards. Players will become friends with a particular character during the game, with who that character is depending on the house chosen.

The Gryffindor companion is Natsai ‘Natty’ Onai, Ravenclaw is Amit Thakkar, Hufflepuff is Poppy Sweeting, and Slytherin is Sebastian Sallow. Each house also has its own common room and different coloured robes.

Gryffindor is red and gold, Hufflepuff is yellow and black, Ravenclaw is blue and bronze, and Slytherin is green and silver. The common rooms match the colour scheme of the robes, and each have their own decorative qualities:

Gryffindor

The Gryffindor common room is in Gryffindor Tower, with its entrance hiding behind the portrait of the Fat Lady. It looks similar to the house as seen in the films, with the walls covered in red and gold tapestries, with lion-themed ornaments everywhere – as well as a huge fireplace.

Ravenclaw

Ravenclaw’s reside on two levels at the top of Ravenclaw Tower. Perhaps the most impressive-looking common room, it is a large, bright circular space housing a marble statue of the house founder, Rowena Ravenclaw.

Hufflepuff

The Hufflepuff common room looks like a greenhouse and is decorated with many plants and herbs. Situated below the Great Hall, this common room’s exposed brick walls and soft lighting make it arguably the homeliest.

Slytherin

Like in the books and films, the Slytherin common room is in the castle dungeons – and also partly under the Black Lake. To enter, players must interact with a stone snake on the floor to reveal a dimly lit common room filled with serpent motifs.
