HMRC urges couples to check for £252 tax break in new year to help boost finances

Married couples and those in a civil partnership are being urged not to miss out on tax relief worth up to £252 every year. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) took to social media to remind people to claim all the financial support they may be entitled to.

Marriage Allowance enables people to share their Personal Tax Allowance and can apply if one partner earns below the personal allowance threshold of £12,570 and the other is a basic rate taxpayer. Couples who have been married for years can still qualify.

Eligible couples can transfer 10% of their tax-free allowance to their partner, reducing the tax they pay by up to £252 each year. You can apply at any time throughout the year and, if eligible, the claim could be backdated by up to four previous tax years to receive a payment worth up to £1,242.
