Historic Merseyside theatre set to be demolished next month

The demolition of the former Southport Theatre is set to begin next month.

Planning approval for the £73 million Marine Lake Events Centre was given the green light in April and the Southport Theatre is being flattened to make way for the development. It is hoped the centre will bring in more than half a million new visitors to Southport each year and generate an annual £18 million for the local economy.

Demolition and construction work will be led by Kier and works are due to start in July 2023 and be completed in December. The demolition project is set to be reviewed, revised, and updated as it progresses.

Southport Theatre and Convention Centre (STCC) went bust in May 2020, just weeks after the country went into the first lockdown. The company behind the STCC, Bliss Space, was forced into liquidation citing the "devastating" trading conditions caused by the pandemic. In April 2022 items from the theater were listed at auction including four bar units, a piano and theatre seats.

The demolition will include the removal of asbestos from the area, demolition of the buildings, and piling to allow the new facility to be created. Two sets of vehicle gates will be installed to the Lower Promenade level as part of a one-way road system into and out of the site. Another set of gates will also be installed at the Promenade level to service the operations of the piling works.

The planning statement submitted to Sefton Council, said: “We register all our sites under the Considerate Contractor Scheme and will for this project. We will address all five areas of the Considerate Constructors Scheme, ie Appearance, Community, Environment, Safety, Workforce.

“We consistently outperform the CCS industry average in all areas and are regularly recognised with awards at the CCS National Site Awards as one of the highest performing companies at these awards.”
