Historic building to be transformed as six libraries marked for closure

Library services in one area of Merseyside are to be overhauled.

As part of its library strategy, St Helens Borough Council has announced the number of libraries in the borough will be reduced from 13 to seven. In an attempt to offer a more central and "modernised" service, the Gamble Building in the town centre will be refurbished and used as a "state of the art" library building.

According to the council, public consultations led to the decision to re-open the Gamble Building, with the grade II listed structure having been closed to the public since 2017. The strategy will however mean libraries in Billinge, Garswood, Parr, Peter Street, Rainford and Rainhill will no longer operate from October 2022.
