The flooding was a result of torrential rainfall from Hurricane Milton, rather than storm surges.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, who witnessed the devastation firsthand, expressed shock at the extent of the flooding. He noted that the flooded community was intended to be a safe haven for individuals fleeing the storm in other areas. Sheriff Chronister recounted how the department had assisted in rescuing 135 elderly and disabled individuals who had been evacuated from Bradenton for their safety.

The neighborhood, predominantly Latino, had been severely affected, with water reaching four feet into the first floors of homes. The local church was destroyed, and residents had lost their vehicles. Many in the community lived day-to-day, without financial security, and now found themselves with nothing.
