Bill Clinton’s House deposition descends into debate about Trump’s relationship with Epstein: Live updates

Former President Bill Clinton’s closed-door deposition with the House Oversight Committee has raised questions about President Donald Trump’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, lawmakers said.

Two hours into the former president’s testimony, Republican Chairman James Comer told reporters that the former president had no indication Trump was involved with Epstein’s crimes – a claim Trump has long-maintained.

Trump has always denied wrongdoing and has never been formally charged with a crime associated with Epstein.

But Democratic members of the committee offered a different perspective, indicating that the information Bill Clinton gave them had raised more questions about Trump and Epstein’s relationship. They did not elaborate or offer details but said the transcript and recording of the deposition would provide clarity.

Bill Clinton had a social and professional relationship with Epstein before Epstein’s first conviction in Florida. The former president has never been charged with a crime associated with Epstein and assured lawmakers Friday that he “saw nothing” and “did nothing wrong.”

His deposition comes one day after his wife, Hillary Clinton, sat for six hours of questioning. Hillary Clinton said she knew very little of Epstein and “deferred” questions to her husband.

Nancy Mace lashes out at ‘unhinged’ Hillary Clinton after her testimony in chaotic Epstein probe

20:30 , Josh Marcus

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton grew “unhinged” on Thursday when she sat for a deposition as part of the congressional investigation into the Epstein files, Rep. Nancy Mace claims.

“I asked her very pointed questions and you’ll see that in the transcript and the video that comes out and you’ll see how she responded as well, screaming,” the South Carolina Republican told reporters Friday, ahead of the House Oversight Committee’s questioning of Clinton’s husband, former President Bill Clinton.

President Donald Trump on Friday expressed some discomfort with the House Oversight Committee’s deposition of former president Bill Clinton and suggested the U.S. could soon see a “friendly” government in charge of Cuba as he spoke to reporters before leaving the White House for a speech in Texas and a golf weekend at his Florida home.

Nancy Mace responds to Hillary Clinton's spokesperson

19:45 , Ariana Baio

Republican Rep. Nancy Mace accused Hillary Clinton’s spokesperson of “trying to spin” the former secretary of state’s “meltdown” during her deposition Thursday.

“Hillary Clinton shamefully used the terrorist attack of 9/11 as a scapegoat to cover for her and her family’s close relationship with Howard Lutnick, Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislane Maxwell,” Mace wrote on X.

“In fact, Lutnick appeared to be key to Hillary trying to fundraise off Epstein for her failed presidential campaign LONG after Epstein was a well-known convicted pedophile (2015),” she added.

After Mace told reporters Hillary Clinton was “screaming” and “unhinged” during her deposition, a spokesperson for Hillary Clinton said Mace was “full of s***.”

Democrats insinuate Clinton gave information that raises questions about Trump

19:20 , Ariana Baio

Democrats on the House Oversight Committee indicated Bill Clinton shared information that has raised questions about Jeffrey Epstein’s relationship with President Donald Trump.

Rep. Maxwell Frost, of Florida, told reporters Friday afternoon that Trump “needs” to testify before the committee because he has been caught in “multiple lies.”

“I can tell you, I’ve seen unredacted files myself that directly refute his assertion that he kicked out Jeffrey Epstein out of Mar-a-Lago and the reasoning why he did that,” Frost said.

“Also, walking out of this, I can tell you we all now have a lot of new questions that we have to raise as it relates to the reasoning on why Donald Trump had a falling out with Jeffrey Epstein in the first place.”

Trump has said he had a falling out with Epstein before his 2008 conviction in Florida. He has long maintained he threw Epstein out of his Mar-a-Lago golf club for acting inappropriately.

President Bill Clinton reportedly told lawmakers on the House Oversight Committee that he did not have any indication that President Donald Trump was involved in Epstein’s crimes.

Chairman Rep. James Comer reiterated Bill Clinton’s claims to reporters Friday afternoon during a break from the deposition.

Comer says Clinton told them "Trump has never said anything to me to make me think he's involved with Epstein."

Clinton spokesperson calls Mace ‘full of s***’

18:15 , Ariana Baio

A spokesperson for Hillary Clinton disputed Rep. Nancy Mace’s assertion that the former secretary of state was “screaming” during her deposition Thursday and lent some insight into the conversation that led to the incident.

“She is full of sh*t,” Nick Merrill said to CNN.

“Was she appalled that Congresswoman Mace wouldn’t let her answer a question about her work as a senator after the murder of 3,000 Americans on 9/11? Absolutely.”

Trump says he doesn't 'like' to see Bill Clinton deposed

President Donald Trump told reporters Friday that he did not like to see former President Bill Clinton deposed by the House Oversight Committee.

"I don't like seeing [it]. They certainly went after me a lot more than that,” Trump told reporters before departing on Marine One.

The president then told reporters, “I don't know anything about the Epstein files. I've been fully exonerated."

Clinton is cooperating, Republican lawmaker says

Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna told reporters that Bill Clinton was cooperating with the committee members' questions so far.

The Republican from Florida gave reporters a brief update on the deposition and shared her own theories about Epstein’s network of employees who allegedly assisted him in trafficking women. Luna said she also believed Epstein was operating an “intelligence gathering operation.”

Bill Clinton criticizes committee for making Hillary sit for deposition

17:00 , Ariana Baio

Bill Clinton reiterated that his wife, Hillary Clinton, had very limited knowledge of Epstein and had “nothing to do” with the convicted sex offender.

"You made Hillary come in,” Bill Clinton said in his opening statement to the lawmakers.

“She had nothing to do with Jeffrey Epstein. Nothing. She has no memory of even meeting him. She neither traveled with him nor visited any of his properties. Whether you subpoenaed 10 people or 10,000, including her was simply not right."

Clinton says he 'saw nothing' and 'did nothing wrong'

16:49 , Ariana Baio

In his opening statement, former President Bill Clinton assured House Oversight Committee members that he “saw nothing” and “did nothing wrong” while with Jeffrey Epstein.

"I had no idea of the crimes Epstein was committing. No matter how many photos you show me, I have two things that, at the end of the day, matter more than your interpretation of those 20-year-old photos,” Bill Clinton said.

“I know what I saw, and more importantly, what I didn't see. I know what I did, and more importantly, what I didn't do. I saw nothing and I did nothing wrong."

'Unhinged' and 'screaming:' Republicans accuse Hillary Clinton of being defiant

16:29 , Ariana Baio

Several Republican committee members described Hillary Clinton’s demeanor in Thursday’s deposition as slightly uncooperative and chaotic.

“I asked her very pointed questions and you’ll see that in the transcript and the video that comes out and you’ll see how she responded as well, screaming,” Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina told reporters Friday morning.

Mace did not specify what she meant by “screaming,” but also said the former was “unhinged.”

“She was unhinged,” Mace said.

Democrats refuted the characterization of Hillary Clinton

"To say the Secretary was screaming, I think, is beyond a mischaracterization," Rep. Robert Garcia said.

Howard Lutnick could be subpoenaed to committee

16:01 , Ariana Baio

Democrat Ro Khanna said he believes the House Oversight Committee has enough votes to force Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to sit for a deposition regarding his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Lutnick has not been accused of wrongdoing associated with Epstein and denies participating or even knowing of Epstein’s crimes.

However, Lutnick was caught omitting information about his relationship with Epstein after the Justice Department released more than three million files. Lutnick and his family traveled to Epstein’s island for lunch in 2012.

Democrats says there are 'serious questions'

15:48 , Ariana Baio

Democrats are continuing to rail against Republicans for asking unrelated questions to Hillary Clinton during her deposition about Epstein and say they want “serious questions” for Bill Clinton today.

“What we’re interested in today is a serious deposition. We have real questions that deserve serious answers,” Rep. Robert Garcia said before Bill Clinton’s deposition began.

Rep. Maxwell Frost urged Republicans, “Don’t waste our time.”

Nancy Mace says Trump does not need to sit for deposition

15:45 , Ariana Baio

Republican Rep. Nancy Mace told CNN Friday morning that she did not think President Donald Trump nor First Lady Melania Trump needed to be questioned by the House Oversight Committee.

“He has answered questions. And the victims that I have spoken to actually exonerated President Trump,” Mace said.

Democrats disagree and believe the Trumps should face questioning too since the president once knew Jeffrey Epstein.

Although Trump knew Epstein, the two ceased their friendship before Epstein was convicted in 2008 in Florida. Trump has said he did not know about Epstein’s crimes and has denied wrongdoing. The president has never been formally charged with a crime related to Epstein.

Mace insisted that Bill Clinton, however, had not been exonerated by survivors of Epstein’s abuse. Bill Clinton also ceased contact with Epstein prior to his 2008 conviction. Bill Clinton has denied wrongdoing and also never been formally charged with a crime related to Epstein.

Republicans say Hillary Clinton deferred 'a lot' of questions to Bill

15:43 , Ariana Baio

Hillary Clinton deferred “at least” a dozen questions about Epstein to her husband, Bill Clinton, while being deposed by lawmakers Thursday, Rep. Comer said during a press conference Friday morning.

"A lot of the Clinton Global Initiative questions yesterday went unanswered because Ms. Clinton deferred to her husband," Comer said.

Comer said he hopes Bill Clinton will be able to answer those questions today.

Comer says he will ask questions about Epstein being in White House

15:38 , Ariana Baio

Rep. James Comer, the Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said they will ask Bill Clinton questions about his correspondence, photos, flights and meetings with Jeffrey Epstein.

“I think the American people have a lot of questions, and our House Oversight committee is committed to getting answers. We’re committed to transparency,” Comer said.

Comer said Hillary Clinton told lawmakers Epstein was in the White House at least 17 times while Clinton was president.

Rep Garcia suggests Melania Trump should come in for deposition

15:00 , Ariana Baio

Rep. Robert Garcia, the ranking Democrat on the committee, said Friday morning that First Lady Melania Trump should be questioned about President Donald Trump’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Garcia told CNN that Republicans on the House Oversight Committee have set a precedent to “Bring in, for depositions, presidents, former presidents and first ladies and then asking those first ladies, as they did yesterday, about how they felt about their husbands.”

It’s worth reiterating that being mentioned or pictured in the recent run of documents published by the Department of Justice in compliance with the Epstein Files Transparency Act does not imply wrongdoing and that the 42nd president has consistently denied any knowledge of Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes.

That being said, Clinton can expect to be asked about images like the following during his deposition today, which emerged as part of the more than 3.5 million files released by the DOJ in late December and January or, prior to that, from the House Oversight Committee’s subpoenas of the Epstein estate.

Former president Bill Clinton is scheduled to testify before the House Oversight Committee regarding Jeffrey Epstein on Friday – one day after his wife sat before the same committee.

The two-term Democratic president is expected to answer questions from lawmakers under oath and behind closed doors in Chappaqua, New York.

The 42nd president had a social and professional relationship with Epstein – and photos of the pair emerged in the Epstein files – but he has denied wrongdoing and has not been formally charged with any crime connected to the deceased sex offender.

Ahead of the proceedings, he dismissed the ordeal as “pure politics” and accused the committee of being a “kangaroo court.”

Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, a Virginia Democrat, slammed the House Oversight Committee’s deposition of Hillary Clinton as a “clown show.”

“Hillary Clinton is not someone we should be focusing on right now,” he told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday evening.

Rep. Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, said she is frustrated that the United States has not done more to pursue justice for Jeffrey Epstein’s victims.

In an interview with Piers Morgan, she was asked why the U.S. has not taken action similar to the U.K., where authorities recently arrested Andrew Mountbatten‑Windsor.

“The United States is continuing its 20-year-long cover up,” Mace said.

“For me, I'm just dismayed that other countries are doing more than ours,” she continued. “We are the leader of the free world and why we would brush this sort of thing under the rug…why we are allowing this to happen and not being forthcoming is deeply problematic.”
