A highly drug-resistant strain of cholera, resistant to 10 antibiotics including two of the three most commonly used for treatment, has spread across multiple countries, raising concerns about its potential to cause widespread devastation.
First identified during Yemen's 2018-2019 outbreak, the strain has since been detected in Lebanon, Kenya, Tanzania, and the Comoros Islands, including a recent outbreak in Mayotte, France. Scientists from the National Reference Center for Vibrios and Cholera at the Institut Pasteur, in collaboration with the Centre hospitalier de Mayotte, have been able to trace the spread of this strain by studying the bacterial genomes. The findings of the study have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine on December 12, 2024. Scientists have revealed the spread of a highly drug-resistant cholera strain.
