A PAROLEE accused of causing a hit-and-run on a motorbike rider at Warners Bay after leading police on a wild pursuit across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie on Tuesday has been refused bail.
Jordan Jaye Young, 23, was allegedly driving at 100kmh in a 60kmh zone and running through stop signs as he led police on a chase from Hamilton South to Cardiff and Warners Bay before dumping the car at Jewells.
He was allegedly spotted by witnesses getting into a white ute and was arrested on the inner-city bypass at Gateshead a short time later, where he allegedly resisted arrest and intimidated police.
Young, who was serving a period of parole until 2027, appeared in handcuffs in a bail division court on Wednesday morning.
He did not enter pleas to charges of driving while disqualified, police pursuit, failing to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing injury, reckless driving, intimidating police and resisting arrest.
But Young did apply for bail, his lawyer citing his full-time employment and a serious illness in the family as reasons why his detention was not justified.
Prosecutors opposed bail and said the case against Young was strong, with witnesses identifying him as the man who got out of the sedan at Jewells and into the ute before his arrest.
Police said Young had put the community in danger during the pursuit and a jail term was inevitable if he was convicted.
Acting Judge Les Brazel said Young had a long criminal history, was on parole, and the case against him was strong.
He said he could not be satisfied Young would comply with any bail conditions and he was concerned about the length of the pursuit.
Acting Judge Brazel refused bail and Young will next appear in Newcastle Local Court on July 16.
Police have said officers from Newcastle City attempted to stop a sedan on Glebe Road at Hamilton South about 9.45am on Tuesday, but the driver failed to stop.
A pursuit was triggered and continued through several suburbs of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, before it was terminated on Macquarie Road near Munibung Road at Cardiff due to safety concerns.
A short time later, police were called to Macquarie Road at Warners Bay after a two-vehicle crash.
Police arrived to find a crash between the sedan and a motorbike.
The rider - a 28-year-old man - was treated by paramedics for minor injuries before being taken to Belmont Hospital for further assessment.
A man and woman in the sedan allegedly fled the scene after the crash.
Police found the sedan abandoned on Gradburn Parade at Jewells and were told that the pair had been picked up in a white ute a short time earlier.
Police then arrested Young and 40-year-old Hope Bryan in the ute on the Inner-City Bypass at Gateshead a short time later.
They were both taken to Belmont police station.
Police said during a search of Bryan, they allegedly found three grams of methamphetamine, while a search of the sedan allegedly uncovered mobile phones and a laptop suspected of being stolen.
Young was charged with the driving offences and resisting arrest, while Bryan was charged with break and enter and possession of a prohibited drug.
