A lorry has struck a railway bridge leading to disruption on the roads in Gateshead.
Emergency crews attended the incident on Lobley Hill Road in Gateshead where a HGV truck was found to have collided with the bridge. Officers from Northumbria Police closed the road to investigate the incident and carry out safety checks.
The closure led to some disruption on the roads and to public transport services in the area. Go North East, the leading bus operator, confirmed that services 93/94/97/96/69/X71/X70/X72 were unable to service stops at Maingate/Victoria Road as a result of the incident.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “At 9.35am today (Thursday) we received a report that a truck had collided with a railway bridge on Lobley Hill Road, Gateshead.
The Force spokesperson added that the bridge was subsequently closed as a result of the crash and the bridge was being inspected by officers.
“The road has been temporarily closed as safety checks are carried out on the bridge.”
Subsequent footage which was taken by our photographer showed the HGV being driven under the bridge it struck earlier today as the repair works continued. The road re-opened at about 1.30am.
