The UK has faced a shortage of HGV drivers for several years. This issue seriously came to a head in autumn 2021 when a combination of factors caused the situation to escalate, including an ageing workforce, COVID, and Brexit.
In October, forecourts across Bristol were pumped dry of petrol and supermarket shelves lay bare as food items were unable to be restoked due to a shortage of drivers.
Fast-forward six months later and there is still a huge demand for lorry drivers in the UK. The Government is continuing to provide funding to help train new HGV drivers, increasing the number of HGV driving tests and encouraging former drivers to return to driving.
