The 49ers on Friday officially announced their trade to acquire defensive end Randy Gregory from the Denver Broncos.
San Francisco prior to the deal had a full roster, so his arrival had to come with a corresponding move. To make room on their 53-man roster the 49ers released defensive lineman Kerry Hyder.
Buy 49ers TicketsHyder played 59 defensive snaps across four games this season with all but one of his snaps coming at DE. He had value as a versatile DL for the 49ers last year when he split his time between the interior and the edge. With better interior depth this year the snaps have dried up for Hyder.
There’s a high likelihood he winds up back on San Francisco’s practice squad. He’s very familiar with their defense and defensive line coach Kris Kocurek. Having him as in-house depth for the either the edge or interior would be helpful.
Don’t be surprised if he’s back in Santa Clara as soon as Saturday when the team makes its pre-Week 5 roster moves.
