The price of everyday groceries such as milk, bread and pasta is set to surge in the coming months, adding an extra €780 to your grocery bill.
That's according to the Consumer Price Index which has released numbers for everyday items rising by as much as 5% in the last 12 months
According to the CPI, everyday items like bread, butter, milk and pasta have all increased in the past year.
In the last month, bread prices have risen 1%, pasta 3.7%, butter 2% and milk 0.2%.
When you look at 2021 as a whole, bread prices have soared by 5.3%, pasta by 6.4% and butter by 2.8%.
Thankfully, there are still grocery options available that won't break the bank.
Here are the cheapest options from Dunnes, Supervalu and Tesco.
Dunnes Stores
Let's start with the bread offering at Dunnes Stores.
The current cheapest white sliced pan of bread in Dunnes is their own in-store brand called "My Family Favourites" that costs 75 cents.
Also priced at 75 cents is Dunnes Sandwich Toaster White, while their white sliced bread costs more at 89 cents.
Next up at Dunnes Stores is pasta.
Like bread, Dunnes Stores own brand of pasta is the cheapest available. Prices start at 59 cents for a 500g bag of white pasta while the cheapest bag of brown pasta is 99 cents.
A one-litre carton of whole milk costs 85 cents in Dunnes, while a one-litre carton of skimmed milk is 95 cents.
Dunnes Stores own-brand Irish creamery butter costs €1.49.
These groceries come to a total of €6.33.
Tesco
Like Dunnes, Tesco own brand pasta is the cheapest on offer. A 500g bag of white spaghetti costs 49 cents and is part of their Aldi price match promise.
White fusilli and penne pasta cost 59 and 69 cents, respectively.
The cheapest one-litre carton of milk costs 85 cents. One litre low-fat and skim milk also cost 85 cents.
Tesco's cheapest bread which are white thick sliced and white sliced pan cost 75 cents.
Their irish creamery butter costs €1.49.
The same groceries in Tesco come to a total of €6.46
SuperValu
And finally, there is SuperValu.
Like Tesco and Dunnes, the SuperValu Irish creamery butter is cheapest at €2.49.
SuperValu's white toasting pan of bread costs €1.09 while the multiseed version is €1.25.
500g bags of pasta start at 54 cents while SuperValu's signature brand of pasta starts at 99 cents.
A one-litre carton of SuperValu own-brand milk costs 85 cents.
Finally, the grand total of these everyday items in Supervalu comes to a total of €8.30
With the full effect of Brexit yet to be felt and continued supply chain constraints due to Covid-19, there is likely to be more increases in grocery prices in the months ahead.
