She took the pregnancy test because her withdrawal bleed never came. At 36, after a year of irregular cycles and hot flushes, she had been diagnosed with premature ovarian insufficiency. Her follicle-stimulating hormone was 62.88 IU/L. Her anti-Mullerian hormone was 0.02 ng/mL. Repeat testing at a second hospital seven months later put her FSH at 66.55 and confirmed the diagnosis. Ultrasound found no antral follicles in either ovary, and pelvic MRI could barely visualize them at all.
Two years into hormone therapy, at 37, the test was positive. Her beta-hCG measured 310.8 mIU/mL and doubled appropriately to 719.5 within 48 hours. A week later, transvaginal ultrasound showed an intrauterine gestational sac with a yolk sac inside it.
