A 59-year-old woman in Japan had previously noticed mild lip swelling after drinking soy milk, and she ate other soy foods without trouble. Then, two weeks after she began taking vonoprazan, a powerful acid-suppressing drug, a dinner that included lightly cooked soybean sprouts left her covered in hives, struggling to breathe, and needing epinephrine.
Three months later, it happened again within about 20 minutes of a bowl of ramen topped with briefly boiled sprouts. This time, she was hospitalized.
