Most people think the trek starts at Govindghat. It starts the night before, when you are lying in a guesthouse in Joshimath or Badrinath, listening to the Alaknanda move in the dark, wondering whether your knees will hold. By the time the first bus drops you at the Govindghat bridge, the mountain has already begun its work.
