Helen George was at the centre of an emotional and traumatic storyline on Sunday's Call The Midwife as her much loved character Trixie Franklin was separated from new fiancé Matthew, due to an illness outbreak in the maternity ward.

And the latest episode of the BBC drama came right as Helen gets set to perform a different role, the part of Anna in hit musical The King and I.

Millions of Call The Midwife fans were left delighted when they tuned into the show' annual Christmas episode, to see Matthew pop the question to Trixie in the dying moments of the festive special, getting down on one knee in romantic surroundings, after seeing his previous attempt to propose thwarted.

Since coming ack to Poplar and resuming her post at Nonatus House, Trixie has been the thick of the action and was pushed to the limit during Sunday's episode when an E-coli outbreak in the maternity ward, forced both the ward and the surgery were to be put on lockdown, so no-one could enter or leave.

That meant Trixie, who was put on round the clock care duties and Matthew were forced apart, with her telling him in a phone call: "I'm so tired it's as if I'm floating. I feel so far away I could be at sea, in a shipwreck, or on a lifeboat. And I don't know if I'm the captain or a survivor just waiting to be rescued."

In response, he told her: "I'd rescue you if I could. I'd swim with you on my back until we were safe in a harbour"

Trixie's pivotal role in Sunday's Call The Midwife came at the end of a week that saw Helen do a number of interviews about her involvement in The King and I tour. Speaking about playing Anna on This Morning, the popular actress said: "...apart from during Covid, I've always tried to do some sort of theatre in between.

"Because it really sort of gets you back and reignites you and I think it sharpens you."
