Hegseth confirms US military will cut 20% of its generals and admirals

  • Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced during his State of the Force address at Marine Corps Base Quantico that the U.S. military will reduce its number of generals and admirals by 20 percent by January 1, 2027.
  • The new directive doubles a previously ordered 10 percent reduction of roughly 800 flag and general officer positions, which Hegseth characterized as long-overdue accountability designed to eliminate redundant bureaucratic layers.
  • The high-level officer cuts come amid widespread U.S. military actions worldwide, including an ongoing seven-month conflict with Iran, the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, and strikes against suspected Latin American drug traffickers.
  • Critics, including Democratic Senator Mark Kelly, condemned the reductions as a purge of experienced senior officers that could take a generation for the armed forces to recover from.
  • The flag officer reductions follow previous high-profile dismissals of top military leaders and coincide with Hegseth's broader effort to eliminate diversity programs, enforce new physical fitness standards, and ban transgender troops.
