Heavily pregnant woman makes formal complaint to police about van driver

Police are investigating a report of an orange VW van driving so dangerously, a heavily-pregnant woman said she feared she and her unborn baby would lose their lives as she swerved onto a pavement to avoid it.

NHS receptionist Leah Jones from Merthyr Tydfil was travelling home from work at about 6.05pm on Friday when she said she experienced a terrifying near-miss on Goat Mill Road. Leah, who is 32 weeks pregnant, said she was approaching the roundabout on her way to Dowlais as an orange VW van had just come off it and was heading towards Merthyr town centre.

She said: "He was coming over to my side of the road. It happened so quick but I swerved in by going on top of the pavement and going round him. I think it was very close. He must have been going at some speed to come round like that.

Leah believes she and her child "could have been gone" if not for a matter of inches. She added: "All weekend I've been feeling awful. It's kept going through my head. I just don't understand why he was driving that way."

Her mother Lisa said Leah was left "traumatised" by the incident and that she and her baby are "lucky to be alive". She urged anyone with information to come forward.

Urging anyone with information to contact South Wales Police, Lisa added: "It was an orange VW, possibly a works van."

A police spokesperson said: "At around 7.30pm yesterday (Sunday June 19), we received a report of an orange VW van driving dangerously on Goat Mill Road, Dowlais.

"It is believed the incident occurred at around 6am on Friday June 17. There are no reported injuries. Enquiries are on-going.
