Heatwave in Spain: Forecast for weather in Alicante, Benidorm, Majorca and Lanzarote as temperatures reach 40C

While us Brits are set for cooler and rainier weather next week, parts of Spain are experiencing their hottest May ever with temperatures above 40C in some places.

The BBC reports that, according to state weather agency AEMET, heat warnings have been issued in 10 regions, saying it could be "one of the most intense" heatwaves in years. The unusually warm spring weather is reportedly a result of hot air coming over from North Africa, which has meant temperatures have risen by some 15C above average for this time of year.

In southern Spain, the city of Jaén recorded its highest ever May temperature of 40C on Friday and the worst-hit regions include Andalusia in the south, Extremadura in the southwest, Madrid and Castilla La Mancha in the central region and Aragon in the northeast. It's so hot that the country's health ministry has had to remind people to drink lots of water, keep to cooler areas when possible and reduce physical activity.

If you're planning on visiting the country on holiday this week, you may be feeling the heat and may want to ensure you're packing all the essentials and more for a very hot trip to Spain. But, as not all of the Spanish destinations us Brits know and love are in the midst of a heatwave, you might want to check the forecasts below or search for your destination on weather service AEMET or even the Met Office for more information.

This week will see highs in Alicante reach 33C tomorrow morning (Monday, May 23) before the temperature drops down to 21C in the evening. The rest of the week looks partly cloudly with showers. On Tuesday and Wednesday, there's between a 60-80% chance of rain.

Majorca has seen temperatures in the 30s today (May 22) and temperatures for the rest of the week, according to the Met Office, look set to stay in the 20s with weather staying sunny with a bit of cloud.

Lanzarote will also see plenty of sunshine this week, with clear skies on all but Wednesday. It will also see temperatures between 19 and 27C, maybe even rising to 28 come Friday and Saturday (May 27 and 28). Benidorm looks set to be sunny all week, though temperatures will be around the low to mid-twenties.
