A powerful winter storm sweeping the US Northeast has forced the cancellation of thousands of flights including routes to and from London Heathrow.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani declared a state of emergency and urged people to stay at home as the city was placed under its first blzzard warning since 2017.
