A second cyclist involved in the crash on Gungahlin Drive on August 27 has died in hospital on Thursday evening, a week after the incident.
ACT Policing said the victim, identified as a 39-year-old man, who was transported to hospital in a critical condition after the crash, died on September 3.
The crash happened about 6.20am on Thursday, August 27 between Wells Station Drive and Kosciuszko Avenue in Palmerston after a blue sedan crashed into a group of five triathletes on a cycling training session.
Triathlete Bridie Lee, 32, from Perth died at the scene following the crash and her 39-year-old fellow rider was transported to hospital in a critical condition before succumbing to his injuries a week later.
The news of the second cyclist's death was received with shock across Canberra's cycling community, with condolences pouring in on social media.
Local cycling groups and individuals expressed heartbreak over the loss of the 39-year-old male cyclist, whose identity is yet to be released by his family or the Canberra Bilbys Triathlon Club in which the cyclist were members.
The two cyclists were part of the club's "bunch ride" training session alongside three teammates when the crash occurred on Gungahlin Drive, near Valley Avenue.
ACT peak cycling body Pedal Power said on social media that the community was "deeply saddened" to learn of the rider's death.
"We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and fellow riders. We continue to hold the families and loved ones of both cyclists who lost their lives in our thoughts during this unimaginably difficult time," the group said.
"Two lives have now been lost following this devastating incident. Our thoughts are with everyone across our community affected by this tragedy. This loss will be deeply felt throughout Canberra's cycling community. Everyone deserves to get home safely, no matter how they travel."
As of Friday afternoon, police were yet to lay charges against the driver of the car that struck the group on Gungahlin Drive.
