Health secretary admits ‘failure’ in not questioning Mandelson‘s Epstein ties

  • Wes Streeting, the health secretary, admitted he failed to take seriously reports from 2023 linking Peter Mandelson to paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
  • Streeting now questions his own judgment, stating there was a political and media failure to adequately scrutinise Mandelson's continued relationship with Epstein after his conviction.
  • Lord Mandelson was sacked as the UK's ambassador to the US last year and resigned from the Labour Party and House of Lords in March following the release of new Epstein files.
  • He was arrested in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office, accused of leaking sensitive government information to Epstein while business secretary.
  • A review into Mandelson's ambassadorial appointment revealed that Keir Starmer was warned about Mandelson's "close ties" to Epstein and the associated "reputational risk" but reportedly ignored these concerns.
