Heading to the final or live site? Here's how Knights fans can get there

Knights fans planning the weekend ahead will have more public transport options to choose from.

Thousands of Novocastrians are expected to make their way to Sydney's Accor Stadium, McDonald Jones Stadium and pubs and clubs across town to catch the game on Sunday with kick-off at 7.30pm.

To make game day easier, the Newcastle Herald has your travel details below.

With a sold-out crowd of more than 20,000 people expected, fans are urged to plan their trip and consider all the available travel options ahead of time.

A Keolis Hunter spokeswoman said the Stadium Shuttle will run to and from the grand final live site at McDonald Jones Stadium, extra light rail services will run every 10 minutes from 4pm until midnight and ferry services will be extended until midnight.

"These extra services are in addition to Newcastle Transport's regular Sunday operations and will provide fans with more travel options throughout the day and into the evening," the spokeswoman said.

"We're excited to be part of the day. Planning is under way and more details will be available shortly."

The closest station to the stadium is Broadmeadow on the Central Coast and Newcastle Line and the stadium is a short walk from the station.

Additional trains will be running on the Central Coast and Newcastle Line and Hunter Line on Sunday. Plan your trip using the Transport NSW Trip Planner.

Free shuttle buses will run from Newcastle central business district (CBD), Charlestown/Belmont, Glendale, Wallsend and Mayfield to McDonald Jones Stadium before and after the game.

Ferry services will be extended to midnight and light rail services will operate every 10 minutes from 4pm until midnight.

Remember, you'll need to use an Opal card or contactless payment card or device when travelling on public transport to and from the event.

No ticketed parking will be available for the event.

Traffic is expected to be heavier than usual in the area as fans travel to and from the live site, so allow extra travel time and check Live Traffic NSW for real-time updates.

Sydney Trains will run a normal weekend timetable on the Central Coast and Newcastle Line on Sunday, with additional services and extra resources deployed across the network to help passengers travelling to and from the NRL grand final.

A sold-out crowd of 80,000 footy fans is expected to descend on Sydney Olympic Park.

The Roosters will take on the Knights in an NRL blockbuster match, while the Roosters and Broncos will battle it out in the NRLW grand final.

Fans are being urged to use public transport to get to and from the game.

Sydney Trains chief executive Matt Longland said extra buses and trains have been scheduled to support the big crowds, with free travel being offered for event ticket holders.

"We are expecting thousands of fans from Sydney and Newcastle to travel across town to cheer on their team. Public transport will be the easiest way to get there for those going to the game," Mr Longland said.

"158 extra suburban services and 30 extra Hunter and Central Coast services will be available for fans to ensure that everybody gets to and from the game.

"Travel on all modes of public transport is included in your match ticket, you just need to show your ticket to transport staff when getting on board. Keep in mind that this travel entitlement does not include the Sydney Airport train station access fee which needs to be paid separately."

Trackwork which was due to be undertaken on the Central Coast and Newcastle line on Sunday has been rescheduled and extra train services have been added to provide additional capacity for Knights fans.

To maximise capacity for passenger services, no freight trains will operate on the Central Coast and Newcastle Line on Sunday.

Additional train services will operate from 10am on Sunday, providing passengers travelling from Newcastle and the Central Coast with train services at least every 30 minutes to Sydney.

After the match, extra trains will operate to help customers return home. Passengers travelling to the NRL grand final should change at Strathfield for Olympic Park services.

Additional Hunter Line services will also operate before and after the event, providing extra capacity for customers travelling via Newcastle Interchange.

Newcastle Knights fans can travel directly to Olympic Park via Central Station or change trains at Strathfield for convenient connections to the venue.

Express trains will run from Central and key Western Line stations to Olympic Park from early afternoon on Sunday, with return services running frequently after the match. There will also be frequent trains between Lidcombe and Olympic Park until late.

Sydney Olympic Park major event buses will run every five to 20 minutes between 1.35pm and 6.05pm, depending on the route. Buses will run frequently after full-time to get fans home. The last bus on each route will leave Olympic Park by 11pm.

Mr Longland encouraged fans to arrive early and soak up the atmosphere across the Olympic Park precinct.

"Stadium gates open at 1pm, with the NRLW Grand Final kicking off at 4pm ahead of the NRL Grand Final at 7:30pm," he said.

"There will be plenty happening across the precinct before kick-off, so arriving early is a great way to avoid the last minute rush."

Fans are urged to leave the car at home and catch public transport to avoid getting caught in traffic delays. If you haven't pre-booked parking do not drive to Olympic Park as there will be no parking available on site.

Roads will also be closed within the precinct throughout the day.

Fans who need to drive can consider parking at a commuter car park and completing their journey to Olympic Park by train or event bus.

The pre-game show starts at 7pm ahead of the men's NRL grand final kick-off at 7.30pm with full-time around 9.20pm.
