The sudden and tragic death of Hollywood actress Hayden Panettiere has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry. In a stark intersection of personal tragedy and legal consequences, court records have revealed that just three days before Panettiere’s passing, her former boyfriend Brian Hickerson was trying to have his domestic abuse convictions against her expunged from his record.
A Los Angeles judge ultimately flatly denied Hickerson’s formal petition to reduce his past domestic violence convictions to misdemeanors.
Back in April 2021, Hickerson’s legal troubles culminated in an eight-count criminal indictment in Los Angeles. Facing the possibility of significant prison time, Hickerson entered a no-contest plea to two felony counts of injuring a spouse or girlfriend. According to Page Six, the charges stemmed from a string of violent encounters between May 2019 and January 2020 involving Panettiere.
He said he was in a dark place
Hickerson was sentenced to 45 days in county jail, four years of formal probation, 52 mandatory domestic violence classes and a strict five-year restraining order. After receiving credit for 12 days he had previously served, he spent 33 days inside the Los Angeles Men’s Central Jail.
Years later, Hickerson filed a motion seeking to clear his record. His lawyers argued that he had already fulfilled every requirement of his probation. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office strongly opposed the request, as did the state. Court officials confirmed that this was Hickerson’s second failed attempt to clear his record, with his first attempt coming in July 2025.
In 2018, despite multiple high-profile arrests, the couple found themselves caught in a continuous cycle of breakups and reconciliations. One of the most serious public flashpoints occurred on Valentine’s Day in 2020 in Jackson, Wyoming, where authorities alleged that Hickerson struck Panettiere in the face with a closed fist.
Panettiere would later detail the cycle of physical and psychological trauma in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. She reportedly described the immense difficulty of breaking away from an abusive partner, comparing the experience to pulling out an entangled weed that constantly resurfaces.
The Heroes star noted that abusers always find a way to “slither back in,” regardless of how strong-willed a person might be.
Even Hickerson acknowledged some of the toxic dynamics depicted in the book. According to Page Six, he recalled several instances of severe substance abuse during his relationship with Panettiere and admitted that he had begged her on multiple occasions not to make the details of his time in a “dark place” public. He specifically recalled one incident, saying, “There’s a story where I was drunk, right? Hayden was standing across the room and I had a phone in my hand and I said, ‘Hayden, I’ll give you 10 seconds to run as fast as you can before I throw it at you.’”
The legal record of the abuse are now permanent
Despite their history, the two were spotted traveling together as recently as March 2026. That cycle was permanently cut short over the weekend when emergency dispatchers received a report of a critical incident at Panettiere’s apartment complex. The former Nashville star was officially pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m. at the age of 36.
As the entertainment world mourns her loss, the denial of Hickerson’s expungement request now stands as a permanent legal record of the abuse that defined one of the darkest periods of Panettiere’s life.
