Hawkesbury mayor Patrick Conolly was stabbed during a robbery at his north-west Sydney home overnight, with the family car allegedly stolen in the incident.
Cr Conolly, 32, was at home in Bligh Park - near Windsor - with his wife and four children when a group of men broke in, police have been told.
Hawkesbury City Council has confirmed that Cr Conolly had been injured and was now recovering.
Police say a man was stabbed in the left arm after five to six men invaded his home on Porpoise Crescent.
The assailants stole personal items and fled in the family's white Skoda about 12:45am this morning.
"He was treated at the scene before being taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition," police said in a statement.
"Police have been told five to six men forced their way into the home and threatened the male occupant before he was stabbed.
"The men then left the scene in the family's white Skoda, taking a few personal items."
Police are now hunting for those responsible and have appealed to the public for information.
It is believed the incident was a case of mistaken identity.
In a statement, Hawkesbury City Council confirmed there was an invasion at Cr Conolly's house last night.
"The mayor was injured during the invasion but he has received treatment and his family [members] were uninjured," a council spokesperson said.
"The NSW Police Force is investigating the incident."
