TV presenter, writer and satirist Charlie Brooker returns to host Have I Got News for You on Friday, April 14. The 52-year-old, who is the showrunner of smash hit Netflix series Black Mirror, has previously fronted the BBC panel show on numerous occasions in the past.
Charlie joins usual team captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton on the show, which has been running since 1990. The three of them, along with celebrity guests Miles Jupp and Charlotte Ivers, will be discussing the various news stories of the week.
This series of Have I Got News For You is set to have a whole host of famous faces as host. Next week’s episode will see Doctor Who star David Tennant in the hot seat.
Over the years, Charlie has become a recognisable face on British television. But who is his children’s TV star wife, why did he stop making the comedy review (Wipe) shows and why exactly is he so grumpy? Here’s everything you need to know. Who is Charlie Brooker married to?
In July 2010 Charlie married former Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq. They became engaged after dating for nine months.
Charlie and Konnie have two children together - Covey (born March 2012) and Huxley (born February 2014). They live in west London.
Why does Charlie Brooker not make the Wipe series anymore?
Screenwipe saw Charlie review TV shows in a humorous tone. The original iteration of the show ran for five series between 2006-2008.
Between 2009-2017 Charlie worked on Screenwipe’s successors - Newswipe, Gameswipe and Weekly Wipe. As their titles suggest, these shows focused on a series of other topics.
Unfortunately due to Charlie’s other commitments - namely anthology series Black Mirror - he has been unable to make any more episodes of the Wipe series. Following the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, however, Charlie released a one-off special entitled Antiviral Wipe.
Why is Charlie Brooker so grumpy?
Despite the fact that he appeared to be a grumpy cynic on the Wipe series, Charlie has insisted that he’s actually “quite pleasant”. Speaking in 2013 Charlie told The Irish Times: "You can't be an angry outsider when you've a show on Sky, a show on Channel 4 and some shows on the BBC. I'm not really sitting at home in my dressing gown, looking at TV, going, 'This is f***ing s**t.' That was the persona of the early Screenwipe stuff.”
He added: "I can still adopt that persona, but it's from a more comic perspective. I see it as a performance." Catch Charlie on Have I Got News For You at 9pm on BBC One on Friday, April 14.
