Harry Kane penalty ensures England rescue Nations League point in Germany

Harry Kane penalty ensures England rescue Nations League point in Germany

HARRY KANE helped to rescue a point for England last night to ensure they did not suffer two Nations League defeats on the spin.

The Tottenham striker bagged from 12-yards in the dying minutes of the game in Germany, as the two powerhouses of international football shared the spoils in Munich.

Jonas Hofmann had the home side in a deserved lead shortly after the start of the second-half.

However, Kane’s latest goal for his country meant that Gareth Southgate’s men avoided two defeats on the bounce, as they clocked their first point of the new Nations League campaign.

The first-half was a bit messy, if truth be told. There were opportunities at either end, but with the quality on pitch, the match was rather disappointing, although, Germany did look the more dangerous of the sides.

Kane had the biggest chance of the opening period, but couldn’t convert.

Bukayo Saka looked bright from an England perspective, while Raheem Sterling appeared to be struggling.

Kalvin Phillips was forced off through injury in the first-half, as he failed to recover from a knock. Teenage talent Jude Bellingham replaced the Leeds midfielder.

It didn’t take long for the deadlock to be broken after the break, though. Jonas scored his first goal for his country.

After some neat interplay between Joshua Kimmich and Ilkay Gundogan, the ball found its way to Hofmann inside the area. The No.18 took a touch to set himself, before firing a powerful effort past Jordan Pickford.

It was a deserved lead for the hosts. Pickford will not want to watch it back, mind you – he should’ve done better.

Mason Mount tested Manuel Neuer shortly after the goal, as he broke into space around 30-yards from goal. The Bayern Munich hero was able to palm the ball to safety.

Jamal Musiala is certainly a name to keep an eye out for in the coming years. He enjoyed a great game on the wing for the Germans. He appears to be the next big player to come through Munich’s ranks.

Thomas Mueller forced Pickford into a superb reaction save at his back-post. The experienced forward hit the ball into the ground, but the Everton No.1 was equal to the effort.

Maguire would have a looping header trouble Neuer, but he managed to punch clear.

Seconds later, he had to be on top form yet again to deny Kane from close range. Jack Grealish fired a wicked ball across goal for the striker. He got a clean contact on the stretch, but the ball deflected off Neuer’s body and out for a corner.

With England well on top in an attempt to grab a point, Jarrod Bowen then flashed another cross across the face of goal, but again the ball was cleared.

However, England did get their goal, after Kane was fouled inside the area on 85-minutes. He stepped up from the penalty spot, to ensure the game finished in stalemate.

The other game in the group finished 2-1 to Italy as last year's Euros winners beat Hungary.
