Harry Kane makes Tom Brady admission and reveals extreme England World Cup training regime

Harry Kane's appearance on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon' on Thursday saw him reveal all on his relationship with NFL star Tom Brady and the extreme preparations England underwent for the last World Cup.

The striker had a mixed season with Tottenham, but after a slow start he found his form as the campaign went on, building a strong on-field relationship with Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski. The 28-year-old finished the season with a goal tally of 17 goals in the Premier League and nine assists, as Spurs finished inside the top four, securing Champions League football for next season.

With the 2021/22 campaign coming to an end, some of the Tottenham players have joined up with their country for international duties and others are taking a well-deserved break. Kane has jetted off to USA and started his interview with Fallon by admitting that he wasn't the best player in the team when he was younger.

"I really had to work hard to prove people wrong, but I think that's what made me kind of who I am today and got me to the level I have go to because of that kind of self-belief, that drive, that determination," he admitted on the show.

Fans will have previously seen the England captain pictured with Brady, who went to Old Trafford in March to watch Tottenham play Man United. Kane explained that it was a documentary about the quarterback that inspired him growing up.

"I was away at another club on loan and I wasn't getting in the team and it was kind of that period - I was 18-years-old - and it was like: 'If I can't play here, how can I play for my team Tottenham?' I came across this documentary on YouTube, it was called the 'Brady 6'," the England captain said.

"It was kind of about how he got picked in the 6th round and then became who he became, one of the greatest sportsmen ever. It just gave me belief that it was really possible for me to go on and have that career and thankfully I was able to do that."

The 28-year-old admitted that he slid into the NFL star's DMs after he commented on Kane's Instagram picture, which is when they "got talking". The striker was asked if he knew that Brady was going to announce that he was coming out of retirement, which happened a day after the Man United clash.

"I wasn't 100% sure, he actually came to go a game in the UK about two months ago. It was the day before he announced he was coming back to play," Kane explained.

"I asked him: 'How are you getting on, how's retirement treating you?'. And his face was like, 'Mmm I'm not sure if I am ready yet'. I thought it was great, I love watching him and it's great for the sport."

Talk then turned to the World Cup, with another coming up at the end of the year. Kane is just five goals away from breaking the record for being the all-time goal scorer for England.

Wayne Rooney currently holds the record, with the 36-year-old scoring 53 goals in 120 caps. The current England captain admitted he is excited for the upcoming competition and that he hopes he can "try and break that goal record while we're there".

"The last World Cup was really special. We got to the semi-final, which was the first we'd got to in 30 years as a nation and the country was going pretty mad," the 28-year-old said.

"We fell that one step short, but I am really looking forward to this one, we have a great team, really good players, really good coach and we have been building nicely to this World Cup and I'm really looking forward to it."

What some people may not have known is that Gareth Southgate's side went to train with the Royal Marines before the last World Cup in 2018. Kane explained that the England team had their phones taken away and it was a time for the team to "get together and do some team bonding" before the international competition.

"I loved it, if I'm honest. We turned up, they took our phones away, put us in the uniform, kind of took us straight out to the middle of the forest and we learned how to put the tents up, cooking on the fire," the Tottenham striker said.

"We did some tactical training in the woods and then a three-mile hike at 5am the next morning. We did it all. I think they call it the sheep's dip when you go under the tunnel in the water and everything like that. It was really cool.

"We were grateful for that team bonding aspect, we were together for three days, getting to know them. They were getting to know us and I think it really helped us in that World Cup," he added.
