Harry and Meghan face heavy criticism in the US over Netflix series

Commentators have said that Harry and Meghan's Netflix series will see the American public turn against the couple amid their "vicious attacks on the Royal Family".

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex now live in the USA and have just released a documentary about their withdrawal from Royal duties on the streaming service Netflix. The pair have said that they hope the documentary will put across "their side" of the public rift that has seeming grown between the Prince and his family.

Royal biographer Tina Brown, a former editor of US magazine Vanity Fair who lives in New York, said: "There is hardly a new thing in this three hours which I snored through. The thing that struck me the most was the great dissonance between the way they present themselves as these two people who, quote, have never told their story, when in fact they told their story to 49m people on Oprah's show and have gone on telling it ever since.

"But their stance is as if they are two people who left the royal family and sort of went off to live in the outer hebrides without cellphones and have now come to their farmhouse gates to tell the story of how terrible it was, when in fact they left the Royal Family to go into this celebrity fest in Montecito surrounded by other celebrities and have never stopped talking to the press ever since. You can't shut them up."

'I suspect the next two months – to use a psychological term – are the Sussexes' 'extinction burst'," she said.

The Daily Express have spoken to Nile Gardiner, who is a commentator on US and British TV as well as a former aid to Margaret Thatcher. He said: "The Prince and Princess of Wales had a hugely successful visit to the US. They are wonderful representatives for the Royal Family and British people.

"There is a massive difference in the grace from William and Kate compared to the deeply unpleasant vanity of Meghan and Harry. They are poles apart in terms of how they conduct themselves on the world stage. The future is in very safe hands with William Kate, and the American people clearly love them. But the American people will begin turning against Meghan and Harry.

"They will be popular with the liberal left wing elite but increasingly unpopular with the American people. They will become isolated in the US and will be as unpopular here as they are in the UK. Americans don't like vicious attacks on the Royal Family. The monarchy remains extremely popular in the US."

Adopting some strong language which has been the hallmark of many commentators on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Mr Gardiner said the series was a "declaration of war". He added: "This documentary series will result in a furious backlash against Meghan and Harry in the UK but it will also be extremely damaging for Meghan and Harry in the US.

"There is a lot of support for the Royal Family in America and the British monarchy is still very popular. The Queen was a deeply loved figure in the US. This all-out assault on the Royal Family is going to go down extremely badly in the US. It will backfire dramatically on Meghan and Harry."

The documentary hasn't captured everyone's imagination with some labelling it as "boring". You can follow our live blog on the fall out form the doc here.
