Jonathan Gatto has been charged with first-degree murder after police alleged that he strangled his wife, Dr Julia Pederson, a UPMC paediatrician, before setting her body on fire inside their Harrisburg home. Their seven-year-old daughter was asleep upstairs, according to court documents.
Investigators said an autopsy showed that Pederson died before the fire, which a Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal determined had been deliberately set. Gatto told police he woke to smoke alarms and burned his hand while trying to reach her.
