'Hard to speak' - Emotional Angus Gunn on Scotland vs Hungary 'suckerpunch'

Emotional Angus Gunn was left struggling to speak after Scotland's heartbreaking Euro 2024 exit to Hungary.

Steve Clarke's side were eliminated in the group stage after a 100th-minute winner from Kevin Csoboth scuppered any chances of progressing into the knockout rounds.

Clearly pained by the result, Gunn admitted he was left bitterly disappointed to crash out after the "suckerpunch" late strike.

The Scotland No1 commented: "It's hard to speak to be honest. I thought everyone gave their best out there.

"The goal at the end was because we were going for it, but I think the effort we gave today showed the fans and the country what it means to us.

"They managed to counter at the end and it was a bit of a suckerpunch because I thought we defended very well for most of the game."

"It's hard to feel like that right now," said Gunn when assured he and his team-mates gave it everything by reporter Eilidh Barbour. "I think when we do look back we created chances we had opportunities and it didn't fall for us, deflections didn't go our way and we couldn't score.

"At the end of the day we are out and nothing really matters any more."

Gunn was involved in a horrible moment in the second half with the match halted after a nasty head collision involving Hungary forward Barnabas Varga.

The striker required urgent medical attention and was stretchered off after seven minutes on the pitch with his team-mates forming a human shield as Varga was treated.

It's understood the forward is now in a stable condition and conscious after the horrible incident.

On the awful moment, Gunn added: "That was a bit of a blur. I had to come and I thought I done well, it was a bit painful, hopefully, the guy is alright."
