These are the hard-hitting images that defined 2024 - another year of huge developments across the globe.

The year saw a number of political earthquakes, including the reelection of Donald Trump in the US and an assassination attempt on his life.

One extraordinary photograph shows the President-elect with blood down his face after a bullet whistled past his ear at a rally in July.

In the UK, former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak memorably announced that a General Election would be held in the pouring rain - kicking off a miserable campaign for the Tories who were ousted by a Labour landslide.

King Charles and the Princess of Wales also both revealed that they were battling cancer.

One particularly memorable image captures the King reading through the 7,000 letters and cards of support sent to him from around the world.

One incredible picture that has made our list shows the solar eclipse above the Washington monument in Washington DC.

And another image, featured on the Standard’s front page, shows the moment that two household cavalry horses became loose from their riders while exercising in central London in July.

In sport, the nation was left heartbroken again after the England men’s football team lost 2-1 to Spain in the Euros final - with cameras capturing the anguish of midfielder Jude Bellingham at the end of the game.

Tennis legend Andy Murray also retired from the sport after the 2024 Paris Olympic Games following an incredible career which saw him win Wimbledon twice.

War continued in Gaza and Ukraine, with harrowing images laying bare the devastation for civilians.

Photographers also captured the extraordinary aftermath of a volcanic eruption that started on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland in early November.
