Hamilton Accies Women’s head coach Gary Doctor says his side should have beat Aberdeen on Sunday – but not scoring when they were in the ascendency cost them in a 2-1 defeat.
Doctor’s side are now eight points adrift in SWPL1’s bottom spot after a tough defeat in the north. They sit with just the sole victory this league season.
Bayley Hutchison and Chloe Gover goals inflicted the damage upon Accies, who pulled one back late on through Megan Quigley, but it wasn’t enough.
Things don’t get much easier this weekend as they face champions Glasgow City, but Doctor is well aware that his team have to start picking up wins instead of good performances.
Doctor said of the defeat: “We have to take it on the chin. I would say that’s as well as we have played. There’s maybe been some weeks where we haven’t deserved as much from narrow defeats.
“That was one that hurts a bit more as we did play well. We should have won and I haven’t said that often. We were so dominant in the first half and forced them into changes.
“We had a shot cleared off the line and hit the post from a corner. But you have to score when you are on top and we were on top. That type of performance has been coming.
“We have performed well in this past month in particular but you have to score. I suppose that’s been our Achilles heel all season. The table shows that as we are the lowest scorers.
“But our defensive record isn’t as bad as a few others. We need to score when you’re on top and we didn’t do it on Sunday.”
