Half of us are making our cups of tea wrong, say experts

Experts say 44% of us are making our cups of tea wrong as Chocolate Digestives have been revealed as the nation’s favourite biscuits for dunking in tea and coffee. The study, conducted by hamper specialists Cartwright & Butler, polled the UK to reveal the nation's particular habits when it comes to the hot drinks.

The top five biscuits for dunking are:

1. Chocolate Digestives

2. Plain Digestives

3. Rich Teas

4. Milk Chocolate Hobnobs

5. Shortbread

The survey also uncovered our tea and coffee drinking habits, revealing that 63% still drink their tea and coffee if their dunking biscuit of choice breaks off and falls in the cup.

And it was found that 44% of Brits are making their tea wrong. A fifth (20%) of Brits said they make their cup of tea by placing their tea bag in the cup, adding hot water then squeezing the tea bag, whereas over one in 10 (11%) add the hot water, then add milk before taking out the teabag. According to the experts at Cartwright & Butler, both are improper ways for making the perfect brew.

The correct way, according to the experts, is placing your tea bag in the cup, adding hot water, leaving your tea bag to brew before squeezing it and taking it out, followed by adding milk/sugar to your desired level.

On average, it was revealed that Brits drink 2.7 cups of tea and day and 2.3 coffees a day. However, 31% of us drink 3+ coffees and 44% drink 4+ cups of tea a day. Looking at how much we rely on tea and coffee, 41% of us say they cannot somewhat function to some degree without coffee or tea.

Commenting on the survey, Rachel Hardwick, Digital Marketing Manager at Cartwright & Butler said: “With having a love for tea and coffee being a prime trait of British culture, we were interested to find out more about the nations habits surrounding the drinks, from how much we really rely on it to what people believe are the best biscuits for dunking are.”
