MIAMI — A 40-year-old Haitian migrant died on board a U.S. Coast Guard vessel after the Coast Guard stopped the boat she was traveling on with more than 50 other migrants just a few miles off the Palm Beach County shoreline, officials said.
On Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Nathan Bruckenthal intercepted the boat about two miles off Lake Worth Inlet. The boat was carrying 54 Haitian migrants, the Coast Guard said. It’s unclear what time the ship was stopped.
While on the cutter Wednesday morning, the woman was found unresponsive and the Coast Guard crew tried to resuscitate her.
She was medically evacuated to a hospital by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue after she was not able to be revived.
The woman did not have family members on the boat and authorities are going through official channels to notify next of kin, the Coast Guard said.
