Hair expert's 50p trick will ensure you always use the perfect amount of shampoo

It feels like we're being told constantly that we're making mistakes with our hair - from having a hair-washing routine to not towel drying our locks before applying conditioner, hairdressers have been telling us what not to do lately.

And now it seems we've been making another big blunder according to a different expert.

Nicole Petty, a hair expert for Milk + Blush, has explained that many of us could be using too much shampoo and conditioner on our hair when we shower.

Thankfully she also shared an easy tip to work out exactly how much you should be using each time you wash.

Speaking to The Mirror, Nicole claimed that most people will only need to use a 50p coin-sized amount of shampoo on their hair.

She said: "Like the skin on your body and face, your scalp can experience product and oil build-up from styling and general day-to-day living, so it's important to cleanse, exfoliate, and rehydrate it to prevent scalp flaking and hair loss caused by an unhealthy scalp.

"To ace your shampooing, start by wetting your hair thoroughly and rinsing out the excess water.

"Pour about a 50p coin-sized amount of shampoo into your palm and add a splash of water before rubbing the mixture between your hands to create a lather.

"The recommended shampoo amount can vary depending on your hair type. Long, thick, or curly hair may require a larger amount of shampoo (a tablespoon amount), to penetrate the volume of hair and create enough lather to clean the scalp. "

She continued: "The frequency to which you wash your hair will also affect this guideline, as hair that goes longer between washes will need more to remove product and oil build-up.

"Apply the shampoo to the scalp and massage it in for one to three minutes, avoiding the mids and ends of your hair.

"To avoid damaging the scalp's surface, don't use your nails. Instead, use the tips of your fingers to work the shampoo in gently to avoid tangling your hair.

"Spend at least one minute rinsing your hair to remove all the shampoo residue and eliminate the chances of product buildup.

"Once you're done, rinse and repeat the shampooing step to ensure your hair is properly cleansed."

The expert went on to explain how much conditioner you should be using - and it's more than the shampoo.

Nicole claims we need around three tablespoons of conditioner on the ends of the hair to "rehydrate" it. But be sure to avoid putting the product on your scalp.

She adds: "Too much conditioner can weigh the hair down, making it look flat and greasy, but too little conditioner can lead to dryness and frizz, so make sure to apply the correct amount according to your hair's needs.

"You should be applying conditioner to your hair from the chin downwards, leaving it to sit for at least 2-3 minutes before rinsing to maximise its effectiveness.

"And don't forget to follow up with a hair mask once a week to keep your locks looking and feeling great."
