Writer-director James Gunn has unveiled the official soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Music has played a big part in the previous Guardians films, with each film getting its own ‘Awesome Mix’ of songs compiled from cassette mixtapes made by the late mother of superhero Peter Quill – AKA Star-Lord (Chris Pratt).
For the third outing, the new set of songs come from the Microsoft Zune MP3 player that Peter received in Guardians Vol. 2. This allows the latest soundtrack to comprise songs from any era, rather than being restricted to seventies hits as in the first two films.
Now with the superhero sequel set to release next month, Gunn has taken to Twitter to reveal its tracklist with the Awesome Mix Vol. 3. The soundtrack includes an acoustic version of Radiohead‘s Creep, Beastie Boys’ No Sleep Til Brooklyn, The Flaming Lips’ Do You Realize??, Bruce Springsteen‘s Badlands, Alice Cooper‘s I’m Always Chasing Rainbows, and Florence + the Machine‘s Dog Days Are Over, among other hit songs.

On whittling down the tracklist for the latest soundtrack, Gunn told Rolling Stone it was “very, very difficult.” He said: “I felt very uncomfortable picking out songs and making sure that this was the right soundtrack.
“Do I move on to just all eighties songs? Do I use all nineties songs? Or do I do what a Zune would actually have – songs from different eras, which is what I ended up doing.”

The tracklist suggests the latest Guardians film will offer a change in tone to its predecessors, which is echoed in its unsettling official trailer. Gunn said: “It doesn’t start with Come and Get Your Love.
“It starts with Radiohead’s acoustic version of Creep. And that’s just a much different tone from the beginning than the other two films.”
Pratt added that the upcoming blockbuster is more emotionally mature than the previous films, saying: “The kids who loved Guardians were teenagers, and now they’re in their mid-twenties, and it’s really exciting to think that they’re ready for this movie the way that they might not have been nine years ago.”
The Awesome Mix Vol. 3 17 songs is set for release on CD and digital download on May 3, and will also be available on 12” vinyl on May 5 and cassette on July 7. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits cinemas on May 3.
